3. The regional climate and air situation
Ozone

Long-term development of ozone (O3)
The average annual ozone concentration in the region of Stuttgart is between less than 50 and about 60 µg/m³, in summertime between less than 60 and about 70 µg/m³ and in wintertime between less than 20 and about 40 µg/m³. As for ozone, mountains are the most and constantly polluted regions with a concentration of 90 to 100 µg/m³. The average concentration decreases in lower regions, where it frequently drops to zero during the nights and in winter. This shows that the natural ozone level still prevails in the mountains, while in valleys and on plains man-made emissions of precursors increase the ozone concentration in summer, when irradiation is on a high level and reduce the natural levels at night and in winter, when there is no irradiation.
