3. The regional climate and air situation
Temperature conditions

Fig. 3.1: Average annual air temperature of locations at different altitudes in Baden-Württemberg (source: German Meteorological Service)
Temperatures can differ significantly in regions with big altitude difference, like in Southern Germany. This can be seen clearly in figure 3.1. While the average annual temperature on Feldberg is less than 39.2 °F (4 °C), it is more than 50 °F (10 °C) in the Rhine Valley and Neckar Valley.

According to this regression line, the average annual temperature in the Stuttgart region is between about 48 and 50 °F (9 and 10 °C). Temperature drops by 0.5 K per 100 m in Southern Germany.

The average temperature conditions in Greater Stuttgart are listed in table 3.1 (according to KLIMAATLAS VON BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG, Climatic Atlas of Baden-Württemberg, 1953).

The measurements conducted by the German Meteorological Service indicate temperature conditions for Echterdingen (373 m asl.) and for Stuttgart-Zentrum (286 m asl.) as listed in tables 3.2 and 3.3.

 Average temperature in January 32 °F/0 °C
 Average temperature in April 48.2 °F/9 °C
 Average temperature in July 64.4 °F/18 °C
 Average temperature in October 48.2 °F/9 °C
 Annual average 48.2 °F/9 °C
 Average annual fluctuation 64.4 °F/18 °C
 Frost days per year 80
 Ice days per year 20

Table 3.2: Average temperature conditions in Stuttgart-Echterdingen between 1951 and 1980 (source: German Meteorological Service)

According to Bioklimakarten (bio-climate maps, 1987) by the German Meteorological Service, the region registers 4 to 16 days with cold stress in January, depending on the altitude of the place. July has about 4 to 8 days with heat stress, i.e. that people feel thermal stress. Especially the Neckar basin is characterized by thermal stress in summer.
