DVD-ROM Urban Climate Stuttgart 21

DVD-ROM "STADTKLIMA 21"
Stuttgart
  DVD-ROM "URBAN CLIMATE 21"
Stuttgart

The fifth version of the DVD-ROM about urban climate and the urban planning project "Stuttgart 21" is now available (in English and German)

Beschreibung   Description

A. Lohmeyer, Karlsruhe, entwickelt.

Not without reason, the characteristics of Stuttgart's climate and air hygiene have long been the focus of attention. Indeed Stuttgart's favourable location in terms of landscape and climate masks certain problematic aspects of its urban climate.

These result from the fact that the city centre is located in a densely built-up valley basin. Because of this, the wind velocity, which is low in the South-west of Germany anyway, is further reduced. This impairs the ventilation of the city and the transport of air pollutants. Furthermore, low wind velocities facilitate the development of temperature inversions, which in turn reduce the air exchange further.

In calm weather conditions, the pronounced relief of the city area with altitude differences of more than 300 m gives rise to thermally induced local wind systems, which aid ventilation and therefore improve the air quality. Knowlegde of the main ventilation and fresh air paths is a significant element of urban planning in Stuttgart.

The planned redevelopment of about 100 ha of railway area (i.e. "STUTTGART 21") situated in the climatically sensitive city basin makes it necessary to provide the relevant information on climate and air quality and to assimilate it into the planning as early as possible.

The studies performed for the project and the analysis of already existing data provided a wealth of information, mainly in digital form. Thus, for the first time, it was possible to make the data available to experts as well as to a broader public by means of DVD-ROM.

With the possiblity of storing large amounts of data on DVD-ROM, photographs could also be included in the presentation software.

The DVD-ROM "Urban climate 21", edited by the Section of Urban Climatology, City of Stuttgart (Prof. Dr. Jürgen Baumüller) was created with the help of Loymeyer Consulting, Karlsruhe. The new version 5 has been available since October 2008.

The following information regarding urban climatology, for which a specific presentation software has been developed, is presented on the DVD-ROM "Urban climate21":

1) The wind situation of the area with its present land use including nocturnal drainage flows (simulations with a diagnostic wind field model for strong wind situations and with a drainage flow model for clear calm nights)

2) Local wind and temperature distributions in the area to be developed using a three-dimensional microscale model. This includes maps of thermal comfort/stress (predicted mean vote: PMV)

3) Map of the sound immissions due to road and railway traffic and two distribution centres for DB railway cargo

4) Traffic-induced air pollution along the main arterial roads and in the whole planning area of Stuttgart 21

5) Solar radiation

6) Position and graphical presentation of measured wind roses

The studies based on computer simulations use data made available by the State's surveying office (digital terrain model DHM) and the urban surveying office (data on lots and buildings, digital city map) for the existing situation. They form the basis for simulations (using appropriately modified input data) aiming at the study of the climatic characteristics of urban planning drafts and various proposals for "STUTTGART 21".

Altogether the DVD-ROM "Urban climate 21" contains 400 area and line datasets, more than 100 point datasets, 420 textfiles and 1000 photos and pictures. The DVD-ROM "Urban climate 21" is a prominent source about the urban climate of Stuttgart, especially for the project Stuttgart 21.

The DVD-ROM "Urban climate 21" is also available in English.
