March



The first rays of the warming sun lead to a reduction of the heating activity in early spring and a gradually decreasing ambient air concentration of sulphur dioxide and dust particles. The average ambient air concentration of sulphur dioxide in March was below 12 µg/m³ during the past years.

Compared to previous months, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide, which is a major, traffic-related air pollutant, remains nearly the same. The ambient air concentration of nitrogen dioxide does not correlate with the change of seasons. On the other hand, the higher position of the sun does not suffice to initiate the photochemical ozone creation from nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. The average and short-term ozone values remain at a relatively low level.

March is the month that really marks the ending of winter: the ground thaws, farmers can start sowing and the sun is warming. March continues the large-scale pressure variations which started in February. Easterlies occur more often. The sun has a position of 39 degrees and, when weather is clear, it is powerful enough to warm up the ground and the air at noon. This is what meteorologists call an early spring. Temperature can rise to more than 68 °F (20 °C) but it can just as well sink below 14 °F (-10 °C). March has an average of 124 sunshine hours and temperature continues to rise.
