Average monthly and annual values in Stuttgart

February

The month of February is partly characterized by cold fronts of very cold continental air and therefore by significant heating efforts. February's ambient air concentration of pollutants equals that of January.

The impact of heating can also be seen in the higher concentration of dust particles. The ambient air concentration of nitrogen dioxide can be increased periodically to a level of more than 150 µg/m³ in connection with inversion weather conditions, its main source being traffic.

February represents the ending of winter and thus of low temperatures. This is reflected in the reduction of air pollutants by the end of the month.

Westerlies become weaker in February and pressure begins to drop in the belt of high pressure of the northern hemisphere as warming starts here. At the same time, a strong polar high is being formed. The extended-range weather situation favours the advancing of the Russian high. This is why a cold air invasion (late winter) begins in our region around 10 February with impacts on both the average daily temperature and the absolute minimum temperature. With an average temperature of 36.3 °F (2.4 °C), February is only the third coldest month after January and December. The average temperature is 34.2 °F (1.2 °C) higher than in January. What can already be noticed is the higher position of the sun and more hours of sunshine. But a minimum temperature of -12.8 °F (-24.9 °C) in Stuttgart-Hohenheim reminds us of the fact that winter is not yet over. Another reminder is the average amount of ice days (3 to 5) and frost days (14 to 18). By the end of the month, however, temperature can rise to almost 68 °F (20 °C).

Weather lore:

- If February give much snow, a fine summer it doth foreshow.

- When gnats dance in February, the husbandman becomes a beggar.
