6.2 Sulphur dioxide (map-V)

The major sources of sulphur dioxide emissions are domestic fuel and industrial firings as well as power plants. The areal distribution of SO2 emissions reflects the development structure better than that of nitrogen oxides. Besides the high emissions on few grid spaces, like the above-mentioned locations of the power plants Altbach and Münster with emissions of more than 3,000 t/a, further areas present emissions of more than 100 t/a. These are mostly the locations of big heating stations of companies or other large facilities. Higher emissions also occur in more densely-populated areas like the inner cities of Stuttgart, Esslingen, Sindelfingen and Ludwigsburg.
