Average monthly and annual values in Stuttgart

September

The month of September marks the beginning of the autumn months with significantly fewer daylight hours. It is also the month of rising air pollutant concentrations, except for the ozone levels. The critical ozone level is very rarely reached in September. But September marks the beginning of the heating period and this leads to another source of pollution (besides traffic, which plays the major role), i.e. heating systems.

Temperature inversions are more frequent in this month - a situation that favours the accumulation of pollutants in the morning hours.

Areas of high pressure often remain above Central Europe for a longer period of time. It is the time of the Indian summer, which usually reaches its climax of warm weather during the last September days. The phenomena of the warm Indian summer in September and the "sheep's cold snap" in June are two constantly recurring weather particularities. This is why September regularly has a number of summer days: an average of 4.3 days in the inner city and 2.9 days on the Filder plains

Maximum temperatures can even exceed 86 °F (30 °C) in some years. On the other hand, 25 September marks the ending of what is called the frost-free period in Hohenheim as the first frost was recorded on that day. The frost-free period in Hohenheim lasts 127 days, from 21 May to 24 September.

Weather lore:

- If dry be the buck's horn, on Holyrood (26 September) morn.

- Fair on September first, fair for the month.
