Average monthly and annual values in Stuttgart

November

The month of November is notoriously grey and cloudy. Air pollution contributes to this effect as the ambient air concentration of pollutants rises to its high winter level, even if November is still an autumn month. Maximum amounts are reached especially for traffic-related pollutants like nitrogen monoxide and carbon monoxide. This is due to the heavy traffic in November (as a result of few holidays) and to an inversion condition in the ground layer, which frequently occurs and sometimes does not even dissolve during the day.

The ambient air concentration of sulphur dioxide does not reach its winter level yet as average temperatures do not drop radically and the full heating activity is only to be expected for the following winter months.

As cooling continues, November is the month of a gloomy atmosphere and fog patches caused by the cooling of the air in the ground layer in areas of high pressure. As storms over the Atlantic become more and more frequent, November weather is very inconsistent and dank.

The average temperature is below 42.8 °F (6 °C) and frosts up to 14 °F (-10 °C) are possible. Ice days reoccur and there are more than 10 frost days in the higher district of Hohenheim. No need to expect summer days, hot days and sultry days for the next five months. The highest position of the sun is only 22 degrees by the middle of the month.

Weather lore:

- If there's ice in November that will bear a duck, there'll be nothing after but sludge and muck.

- St. Catherine's (25 November) foul or fair, so it will be next Februair.
