6. Emission inventory
6.1 Nitrogen oxides (map-IV)

Download of map-IV (as a PDF file)

Particular areas with power stations (e.g. Altbach with emissions of 4,379 t/a, Münster with 1,504 t/a) have relatively high nitrogen oxides emissions. But, as mentioned above, traffic is the main source of nitrogen oxides. This can be seen clearly in the inventory. Areas tangent to roads are affected by high emissions, especially those near motorways (like the A8 and A81) and A-roads (like the B10 and B27). At the motorway junction Stuttgart-Vaihingen, emissions reach a level of more than 300 t/a. The reason for this is the high vehicle mileage at high speeds. The more the speed increases, the higher are the nitrogen oxide emissions of the vehicles. Another reason for the high emissions is the high percentage of trucks on the motorways and A-roads. Trucks produce about ten times more nitrogen oxides than cars without a controlled catalytic converter.

Nitrogen oxide emissions are also relatively high in the inner city of Stuttgart as traffic is very heavy and dense there.
