Annotations and explanations on how to calculate the position of the sun

Please feel free to contact us via email if you have any better comments and/or explanations.)

Astronomische Dämmerung

Astronomical dawn
The astronomical dawn is defined as the period comprising altitudes of the sun between 0 and -18 degrees, i.e. the period when the sun is located between 0 and 18 degrees below the horizon. The astronomical dawn thus occurs in the morning as well as in the evening.
Nautische Dämmerung

Nautical dawn
The nautical dawn being defined as the period comprising altitudes of the sun between 0 and -12 degrees is shorter than the astronomical dawn.
Bürgerliche Dämmerung

Civil dawn
The civil dawn being defined as the period of altitudes of the sun between 0 and -6,5 degrees is shorter than both the astronomical and the nautical dawn.
It's the time, when you still able to read with-
out switching a light on.
Sonnenaufgang, Sonnenuntergang

Sunrise, sunset
Moments with an altitude of the sun of exactly 0 degrees. (Notice the shade occuring in hilly and mountainous terrain due to the surroundung relief, leading to a position of the horizon higher than 0 degrees and therefore causing later sunrise and earlier sunset in valleys.)
Wahre Mittagszeit (Sonnenhöchststand)

True midday (peak altitude of the sun)
Moment when the sun reaches the highest altitude.
Sonnenhöchststand (Obere Kulmination)

Peak altitude of the sun (top culmination)

The altitude of the sun is given in degrees with zero degrees meaning a position of the sun on the horizon and 90 degrees meaning a vertical position of the sun in relation to the observer. Normally the peak altitude of the sun is between 0 and 90 degrees. If it is below 0 the sun does not rise at all (e.g. during the winter in the northern latitudes).
For peak altitudes of the sun between 0 and 90 degrees, the sun is located in the south if seen from a point of view in the northern hemisphere and vice versa.
For peak altitudes of the sun in excess of 90 degrees, the sun is also located in the north if seen from the northern hemisphere.
Or, to put it in other terms, an observer standing in the northern hemisphere looking south would see the sun behind him!
Himmelsrichtung bei Sonnenaufgang, Himmelsrichtung bei Sonnenuntergang

Direction at sunrise, direction at sunset
The direction is also given in degrees. Zero degrees (or 360 degrees) correspond to north, 90 degrees to east, 180 degrees to south and 270 degrees to west.
If the direction at sunrise is for example 118°18', the sun rises roughly in east-south-east. The same goes for the direction at sunset.
