7.2 Air pollution along roads (measurements)

The ambient air concentration of pollutants usually is significantly higher in the proximity of roads. Measurements carried out by the Office for Environmental Protection with a measurement car in 1995 gave the pollutant concentrations listed in table 7-2 for the road measuring points that are relevant for the planning. The highest concentrations of air pollutants were recorded at Neckartor. The limit value for NO2 (IW1) defined in TA Luft (Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control) was reached there.

The target values for the adherence to the values at selected places, determined by the city council, are listed in table 7-3. The target values (1997) for the average ambient air concentration of NO2 and benzene are reached or even exceeded at the Neckartor measuring point.

The measurements carried out with the measurement car are samples, i.e. that measurements are conducted at every location for about 30 minutes about 52 times a year. These measurements do not allow for the calculation of the 98 percentile value as the number of the samples is too small. The maximum value ("max") is given in table 7-2 instead.
